Esme Dollow's contemporary still life painting explores ideas of nostalgia and the everyday, focussing on the visual qualities of familiar or desirable objects. By portraying these often solitary items with ambiguous backdrops, Dollow aims to displace them from their usual contexts to produce an intimate and emotive representation.

 

Her supplementary figurative work depicts subjects at a moment in time, inanimate, displaced from their surroundings and frozen in silent, contemplative states. For Dollow, this portrayal both challenges and questions the traditional definitions of 'still life' and its conventional subject matter.
